Today’s Quote
“It’s disaster that promises a richer life. Disaster is a doorway to something better. In other words, you never know which way the wind is blowing until things get tough. Furthermore, if you don’t mind getting a little dirty, that wind will carry you very far.”
— Michael J. Fox (American Actor)
Who is Michael J. Fox?
“The indomitable Hollywood star who turns even disaster into the spice of adventure.”
- Date of Birth: June 9, 1961
- Birthplace: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
- Notable Works: The Back to the Future series (as Marty McFly), Family Ties, Spin City
Biography and Character
He made his acting debut at 15 in a Canadian TV drama and moved to the U.S. at 18, becoming a major star through the hit drama Family Ties. With his 1985 role as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, he achieved global fame and became the face of 80s Hollywood thanks to his comedic timing and charming persona.
At the peak of his career (diagnosed in 1991, announced in 1998), he was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s disease. Faced with a “major wall” in his life as both an actor and a person, he chose not to stop. He established the “Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research” and remains passionately committed to funding research for a cure.
Having said, “I wouldn’t have been able to feel this deeply and richly if I hadn’t become ill,” he is truly a “real-life adventurer” who continues to move toward a wider world, transforming his struggles into fuel.
My Thoughts
Good morning. It is June 9, 2026.
“Nothing seems to be going right lately…”
“Another problem. Why does this always happen to me?”
Do you ever feel like sighing when faced with such thoughts?
Life is like a movie script. You get caught up in unexpected trouble and drift far off your intended path—just like when Marty McFly was suddenly thrust into the past in Back to the Future.
But the story doesn’t end there. In fact, that is exactly where the “real adventure” begins.
Today, I would like to introduce the philosophy of the legendary actor Michael J. Fox, who taught us how to turn adversity into a “tailwind.” I hope these words will lighten the burden for anyone feeling like they have hit a wall.
Disaster is a Gateway to Happiness
Michael J. Fox left us these powerful words:
“It’s disaster that promises a richer life. Disaster is a doorway to something better. In other words, you never know which way the wind is blowing until things get tough.”
We tend to think of “trouble = bad.” However, he asserts that disaster is a ticket to a richer life.
This is because, in peaceful, everyday life, we never notice the presence of a “tailwind.” Just as it was for Marty when he traveled through time, trouble forces us to places we could never have reached otherwise. It is only when we face tough situations that we finally see the direction of our life’s wind and realize, “Ah, this is where I truly wanted to go.”
Are You Afraid of “Getting Dirty”?
The latter half of the quote is even more piercing:
“Furthermore, if you don’t mind getting a little dirty, that wind will carry you very far.”
“Getting dirty” here might refer to failing, feeling embarrassed, having your plans fall into chaos, or showing your “not-so-cool” side.
We stay in safe places because we are afraid of getting hurt or failing. However, no strong wind that carries you to distant places blows through a perfectly curated, safe life.
Michael himself experienced a “disaster” of unimaginable scale when he revealed he had Parkinson’s disease at the height of his career. Instead of hiding and shrinking away, he faced the illness, launched a foundation, and shifted his course toward activities that would save many others.
The “very far place” he reached is a life that serves as a beacon of hope for others, far exceeding mere success as an actor. By living messily and desperately, he made the strong wind his ally.
